The Life Experiences among Mothers-in-Law of Multi-Cultural Families

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the life experience and explore the essence of meaning among mothers-in-law of multi-cultural families in Connam area, Korea.

Methods: The study subjects were 9 mothers-in-law of multi-cultural families who are living with foreign daughters-in-law in Chonnam area. The data were collected through focus group interview from July 2009 to August 2010, using open questionnaire. The data were analyzed by the method suggested by Morgan and Kruger (1998).

Results: In this study, the following categories were extracted: 1) Relieved feeling, 2) Conflicts from being different, 3) Being patient, 4) Accepting as my daughter-in-law, 5) Imagining happy future of my son.

Conclusion: The study shows that subjects experience both negative and positive psychological feelings. Therefore, it is needed to reduce negative factors and improve positive factors that they experience in life with foreign
daughters-in-law and to provide consultation and education to mothers-in-law of multi-cultural families.
